Way back in centuries, Africans had their ways of doing certain things which was not influenced by any foreign culture at all. These African ways were environmentally friendly, and yielded perfect results.
In the olden days of Ghana, there was nothing like toothbrush or toothpaste but people had strong teeth, white teeth, great smile and quite good mouth odor. What they were using to brush their teeth were plants and certain home organic products.
Example of plants used during the old days to brush teeth include plantain peels and Jatropha curcas. Charcoal and salt were not done without as far as teeth whitening and good mouth odor were concerned.

Here are the various ways you can whiten your teeth the African way without any dangerous chemicals:

 1. Use of plantain peels and charcoal.
Get a plantain peel and beat it to obtain a spongy-like product.
Grind a charcoal to obtain a fine powder.
Dip the plantain sponge obtained into the fine charcoal powder and rub it on your teeth for some minutes.
Apart from it whitening your teeth, it makes the teeth becomes strong because it contains nutrients like manganese, magnesium, potassium and calcium that are extremely good for the teeth.

 2.  Jatropha curcas.
Break the upper part of the plant to get a clear fluid from it.
Dip a toothbrush in it and brush your teeth with it thoroughly.
You can do it every morning.

 3. Charcoal  and salt.
Grind the charcoal and salt into a fine powder. Get a toothbrush and dip it into it.
Brush your teeth with it morning and evening. This brightens your teeth and kills bacteria in the mouth as well.

 4.  Alchornea cordifolia leaves.
In Akan Twi language, this leaf is called Ogyama. In some parts of Africa, these leaves are referred to as Djeka leaves.
These leaves are very good for whitening teeth and getting rid of bad mouth odor.
Get the leaves, crush them and brush your teeth with it.

 5.  Lemon or lime juice.
Lemon juice is one of the best bleaches you can find. This can help you bleach the teeth and whiten it. Takes out all the dirt in your teeth and gets rid of mouth odor.
Cut the lemon into two, squeeze the juice into a cup. Now brush your teeth with it.
